One of the responsibilities of our referees is to document the rulings they make during their rounds on our “Rules Incidents” cards. I’ve been taking a look at these cards and this is a summary of the rulings we’ve had during Rounds 1 and 2 on this rain-soaked U.S. Open at Bethpage’s Black Course.
The majority of rulings occurred on the 18th hole (40 rulings), followed by the 13th hole (21 rulings) and the 2nd hole (18 rulings).
The rule for Abnormal Ground Conditions, Embedded Ball, Wrong Putting Green – Rule 25, has been reported the most often, with 103 rulings. Most of these are for Casual Water and Embedded Balls. The rules for Ball Unplayable, Searching for and Identifying Ball, and Temporary Immovable Obstructions have also been utilized, but even combined they only add up to 56 rulings. The tall fescue and difficult course have had an impact on play. However, it's clear the wet, soggy course has had the most effect on the rulings that have been made out on the course.
